About XML Sitemaps

An XML sitemap is a structured file that lists the URLs on your website, along with metadata such as when each page was last modified, how often it changes, and its relative priority. Search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo use sitemaps to crawl your site more efficiently.

Best Practices:
  • Include only canonical, indexable URLs
  • Maximum 50,000 URLs per sitemap
  • Maximum file size: 50MB (uncompressed)
  • Use sitemap index for large sites
  • Update lastmod only when content actually changes
  • Submit to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools
Sitemap Elements
  • <loc> — The full URL of the page (required)
  • <lastmod> — Date the page was last modified (W3C format)
  • <changefreq> — How often the page is likely to change
  • <priority> — Relative importance from 0.0 to 1.0
Sitemap Index
  • For sites with more than 50,000 URLs
  • References multiple individual sitemap files
  • Each sitemap file must be under 50MB uncompressed
  • Submit the index file to search engines instead
Priority Guidelines
  • 1.0 — Homepage or most important pages
  • 0.8 — Key category or landing pages
  • 0.5 — Standard content pages
  • 0.3 — Archive or less important pages
Change Frequency Values
  • always — Changes every time it is accessed
  • hourly / daily / weekly — Regular updates
  • monthly / yearly — Infrequent updates
  • never — Archived or static pages
